And due to the peculiarities of his family life, two monasteries appeared in the city: the male monastery of St. Stephen and the female monastery of the Holy Trinity. Both were founded in 1059 by William and his wife, Matilda of Flanders, in order to atone for the incest sin. The fact is that Wilhelm and Matilda were cousins ​​and were forbidden to enter into marriage according to the canons of the time. William tried for several years to obtain permission from the pope for marriage, but he did not receive it. As a result, William and Mathilda decided that getting forgiveness was much easier than permission, they married without a papal blessing, and then, as a gesture of repentance, two abbeys were built.
