I | INTERVIEW. Maxim Kotenev

As noted by sports photographer Maksim Kotenev, he came to photographing almost by accident. And it turned out to be mutual - Maxim has been working in photography for over twelve years.

Maxim, what prompted you to become a professional photographer?
“My interest in photography originated, one might say, from a casual acquaintance. A new friend asked to rate his photo-art on the Internet - he would suddenly be interested. And interested, even lit a fire that still burns.
The first camera was a digital "soap box". I took it off for a relatively long time, but then I realized that I had rested on its technical ceiling. The first SLR was the Nikon D70. I couldn’t even dream of a picture of such a quality - immediately there was depth, pure colors and flexibility in management.

I shot mostly portraits, sometimes reports from sports events (skate, roller skates, snowboard). I was very lucky that my passion for photography coincided with the general rise in popularity of extreme sports in the city, so there were no particular problems in practice. For a long time I was attracted to everything related to skate, graffiti, etc. I saw beautiful photos in magazines about extreme sports and I wanted to do something like that myself.

How did you study photography?
2010-2011 year. We went with the guys to the point, they skated, I shot. Everyone enjoyed it, and someone else took pictures. First, with natural light, then bought a flash Nikon Speedlight SB-900. The picture has become much better, more glossy or something, but there was not enough experience in the production of light.

In terms of training, everything had to be reached by oneself — to look, look, and look, and then try to repeat. If possible, he attended or watched lectures of famous photographers: Vyatkin, Pinkhasov, Umrikhin and many others. Studied by trial and error. Therefore, the process was extremely slow. At one time it even seemed to be tied up with shooting sports.
But my photo stories from the competition were scattered on social networks and were seen in the leading regional edition. He worked with him for two years as a freelancer, while working as an engineer in a defense company, and then moved to the state, finally linking his life to photography.

There was a lot of shooting, mostly reportage, in different conditions, in any weather. It gave me a great experience, but also made me forget about the weekend. Work in the publication opened the opportunity to attend a higher level of competition (by that time, the wave of extreme sports in the city was almost gone) - athletics, boxing, volleyball, basketball and of course football.
At first, I was skeptical about shooting football, but once I got to the stadium, football atmosphere overwhelmed me. I wanted to shoot and shoot. After several years of work in the newspaper, I was invited to become a club photographer at the PFK Arsenal.

Do you have a favorite genre? And what genre are you categorically?
I would call my favorite genre a sports report. But I am also interested in shooting portraits and landscapes, such as sunsets, sunrises or minimalism. In general, I like to experiment in different genres - sometimes it pulls to remove a still life.I do not dwell on one thing, around so many interesting things.

Could you name the shots you are most proud of?
I will not say that I am directly proud of some of my shooting - I am very critical of the result. It always seems that somewhere something is not finalized, it was possible to do better. I think a good shooting report from the match Arsenal — Spartak in May 2017. Our stadium then got hard.

In what setting do you like to shoot the most?
I like to shoot when there is something to shoot - emotions, people, events. I really do not like to "suck from the finger", just because it is a task.
What set of photographic equipment do you use when shooting?
Reportage:
When shooting football matches, I use the Nikon D4 as the main camera and the Nikon D800 as an auxiliary camera. Nikon D4 chose for its rate of fire, high ISO of workers, which is important in shooting a report in poor light. The camera fits comfortably in your hand, during long shootings your hand does not get tired. Moisture protection is also important, because the weather can deteriorate, and in any situation, the shooting must continue. Nikon D800 with its 36 megapixels - above all praise. So it provokes making high-detail shots.
On the Nikon D4, I usually put the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f / 5.6E ED VR telephoto - a relatively light and compact lens with fast autofocus.
On the Nikon D800 I put the AF-S NIKKOR 70-200mm f / 2.8G ED VR II - in a football match, this is more likely a shirik than a telephoto. I really appreciate him for his speed and fast focus.
AF-S NIKKOR 18-35mm f / 3.5-4.5G ED - suitable if you need to remove something large-scale, for example, stands with spectators.
AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f / 4G ED VR - a versatile lens for every day, I shoot them most of the reports.
Fiction:
AF NIKKOR 85mm f / 1.8D - an excellent lens for artistic portraits, conveys volume well.
AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f / 1.4G - high-aperture “fifty dollars”, often use it in low light conditions.

What do you think are the important qualities a photographer should have?

In my opinion, the most important quality of a photographer is the ability to see light, shadow, geometry, composition, dynamics, plot ...
All these components and add up to the final result in the picture.

What inspires you and gives ideas for shooting?

Usually before shooting matches, I look through photos of foreign photo journalists, I try to shift their environment to ours, I look for good moments, I analyze. Anything, music and air can inspire. Sometimes a simple puddle on the pavement at the right angle creates a whole world through the looking glass. In my opinion, the key to filming a report is to be at the right time in the right place. Step left or right and now the hand went wrong, the face came out angular, and the shadow covered the subject at all.

What tips would you give to novice photographers who just purchased a camera?
When shooting a report it is very important to work at 360 degrees. Be everywhere. See everything and more. This is achieved only by practice. Look and shoot as much as you can! Shoot and watch! Read, develop a creative sense, intuition and do not be afraid to make mistakes. Only many years of hard work will bear fruit. You shouldn't think that the expensive camera of the latest model will make you a super cool photographer. ”
