I | INTERVIEW. Ilya Gomyranov

“The microworld is amazing and mysterious. I always wanted to look into it, and the more I learned about animals and plants living next to us, the more I wanted to introduce others to this world. Combining the profession of a biologist and a photographer, I manage to visit sometimes the most remote and hard-to-reach places in which there is a unique world of wildlife, ”Ilya Gomyranov notes.

Ilya, when did you become interested in photography, what prompted you to become a professional photographer?
I have been doing photography for more than ten years. At school, my mother gave me to the biological circle of the Zoo Museum of Moscow State University, part of the curriculum of which was field practice in various regions of the country. At the same time, I began to discover the incredibly diverse world of wildlife, and naturally I wanted to capture it not only in my memory, but also so that I could show someone.
In addition, everything was photographed around, and literally in a couple of months my parents bought me a digital soap box, from which the serious passion for photography began.

And what did you want to be in childhood?
Whom I just did not want to be, ranging from a clown and ending with an architect and a veterinarian. However, at some point I realized that the world of wildlife is so fascinating to me that I never get tired of studying it, and it will not turn into a routine. As a result, I graduated from the Faculty of Biology of Moscow State University and became a professional zoologist, or rather an entomologist, and besides photography, I study flies.

Have your works already participated in exhibitions? Tell about them.
The first platform on which I began to show my work was the Macroclub, in the same place my work was criticized, in parallel trying to help and teach to make the frame better. At first, I probably took the criticism painfully, but gradually listening to the advice, I myself understood that the frames were getting much better. Over time, I began to participate in group exhibitions of the club, as well as win in various competitions. In recent years, I have been very pleased to cooperate with the art project “Forest” by Irina Zhuravleva and participate in the street exhibitions “Forest Stories” and “Forest is our home”,we also organized solo exhibitions in Moscow parks that introduced animals and plants living next to us in various parks of Moscow.

Could you name the shootings you are most proud of? Where and when was it?
It’s extremely difficult to talk about shooting, but I can tell you about my favorite frame. The pearl catcher is probably my most famous shot, which has been published in a variety of publications, and which is still being published. For several years I have been photographing the mating season in gray toads, leaving in the early spring in the near suburbs for the weekend. The mating season in these amphibians lasts a couple of weeks and is highly dependent on air temperature, so in one year I was late for a week and on the pond where I used to take pictures, only single males already swam, and the entire water column was filled with tapes of toad eggs. I was very upset, because it turns out I was “late for spring”, and then I got the idea to capture the world under water. The pond was filled with oak leaves, and the water from it became reddish-brown, thus highlighting the leaves with a flash at the back, I achieved even more red color, and the triton and the ribbons around it with toad caviar became only dark contours, reminding the shadow theater. This survey taught me not to get upset, but to try to find interesting subjects and objects even in the most difficult conditions.

What is your favorite genre? In what setting and where do you like to shoot the most?
Initially, I was shooting macro, but then it became clear that it was impossible, while on an expedition in an inaccessible region, to shoot only insects and other small animals, because the world of wildlife is huge, so I began to shoot both birds and animals, trying to show all the natural riches of or another region. And since most of my expeditions are connected not only with photography, but also with biology, often there is not much time to sit in the backs, and even more so to make “staged” photos, so the reporting genre is closest to me, where heroes people, and various animals and plants.

Why did you choose Nikon?
As I said before, during school years, everyone around me took pictures of my surroundings, and everyone at that time had Nikon cameras with a large set of optics that could be asked to take a particular frame. And when choosing a camera, there was no doubt about the brand, it definitely should have been Nikon, which I have never regretted.

What set of photographic equipment do you use when shooting?
At the moment I use a full-size professional Nikon D4 SLR camera, which since the purchase in 2012, has never failed me in the most difficult conditions, be it pouring rain, scorching desert sun or severe frost. Its reliability and speed of work made it my indispensable companion and tool in observing wildlife. I also use a set of three lenses. One of them is the AF-S VR Micro-NIKKOR 105mm f / 2.8G IF-ED macro lens - it has a convenient focal length, which allows you to shoot at a sufficient distance from the object so as not to frighten it, at the same time you can use this lens flash, as well as he has a remarkable sharpness and very pleasant bokeh.
I use the AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f / 2.8G ED — perhaps the best lens with such focal lengths to create landscape photos, as well as to capture animals in the landscape.
In the last trips, the telephoto lens became the main one, since most animals are fearful and it is not possible to approach them at close distances, also a large focal length allows you to separate the object from the background, erasing it. For a long time, the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f / 4D IF-ED was such a lens - it is compact enough and not very heavy, but it also has an excellent picture and focusing speed. However, this year I switched to the AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f / 5.6E ED VR, which on the last trip was more convenient because of the greater focal length and the ability to change it, because I often cannot move away from the object, and I had to frame the frame differently, abandoning any elements.
As an auxiliary element, I always take with me one or two Nikon Speedlight SB-700 flashes, which I use during night shots, but in most cases I try to shoot without them. They are also quite light, but at the same time quite powerful.

I wonder what was your first camera? Have you ever thought about changing Nikon to another brand?
Now I am shooting Nikon D4, which replaced Nikon D300. The very first cameras were film cameras, a polaroid, after which for a short time there was some kind of compact digital camera with which the passion for photography came. The first SLR camera was the Nikon D40x with a whale lens.
From time to time I missed some NIKKOR lenses, but now Nikon produces most of the optics needed for my work.
I would like to congratulate my favorite company on the anniversary and wish not only not to lose the level of skill, but to develop at the same pace, relying not only on my own experience, but also on the experience of photographers for whom Nikon technology has become the main and main tool in their work.

What important qualities should a photographer have?
It seems to me not only in the genre of wildlife, but in many others, patience, the ability to wait and love for your work and objects of shooting, as well as the ability not to be upset because of failures and not to quit just started, are important. Often behind one beautiful shot are the months of work and dozens of failed duplicates that are not visible to the viewer.
What inspires you, gives ideas for shooting?
The source of my endless inspiration is, first of all, the harmony of nature and its incredible diversity. It seems that you know everything about an object for a long time, but it’s worth watching to see how it surprises you again and again.Over the past decades, people have become very distant from the world of nature, and I like that now more and more people spend their free time watching animals and being in nature, attending various exhibitions and lectures. Talking about my trips, or conducting excursions for people, I am inspired by the emotions that listeners or viewers experience, I like when I manage to convey to the viewers the admiration for the world of wildlife that I experience at the time of shooting. The more people know about the surrounding nature, the more carefully they relate to it, and it seems to me that this is the main goal of natural photography - to give people knowledge about the world and try to captivate people to them.
What advice can you give to novice photographers who have just purchased a camera?
Perhaps the main and most important thing is not to consider yourself a tough professional and anxious about criticism of older and more experienced colleagues. Do not run the first thing "click" everything around, look at the shots that you would call masterpieces, think about how they are made, what techniques a particular photographer could use, and then try to apply them in your work.Just do not get carried away by copying, create something new with your own style. At first, nothing will come out, but this is not a reason to give up and hang your nose!

Finally, tell us about the most memorable shooting. Do you have a dream shooting?
All my shooting was memorable, because I discover the world of wildlife, I study through the camera new regions and new creatures. I find it difficult to select a particular shooting. Now I am answering interview questions, being thousands of kilometers away from my home in South Africa, elephants, giraffes and dozens of other animals that I have seen only on the pages of books are walking around. It seems that here she is the most memorable shooting, but in a few months there will be the next expedition and I will say the same about her.
Apes - my child's love, I can watch them for hours at the zoo, and, perhaps, it is the shooting of orangutans and gorillas - these are shooting my dream, which I will try to realize in the coming years. And I want to see Antarctica and polar bears.
Watching and admiring is whatwhich helps not only to create interesting shots, but also not to be upset because of failures and treats the heroes of filming with respect.
