How to determine dog rabies: signs and forms

Wild form

This is the most common form of rabies. The duration of the disease at this stage is 5-14 days and consists of three stages. At different stages, the symptoms of rabies manifest themselves in different ways.

  • Long normal stage

Since the disease of the animal after the bite often remains unnoticed by the hosts, the first thing you need to pay attention to is mood swings.
The animal hides in the dark corners of the rooms, refuses to carry out the orders of the owner. It happens that there is no reaction to the touch of the host or his voice. In dogs that are playful before the illness, completely opposite signs of rabies are manifested, in the form of licking hands and the requirement of constant attention. That is, the habits of the dog at this stage are radically different from the usual. A dog may occasionally rush around the house, dig holes, listen to something or catch fictional flies.
This is also a violation of food intake.Possible complete rejection of a dog infected with rabies from food, difficulty swallowing (due to inflammation in the nervous system). Not wanting to eat favorite treats, but cracking and swallowing any inedible things and even your feces.
It is worth paying attention to the increased arousal of the dog. It will manifest itself in spontaneous urination or an increase in libido (constant licking of the genital organs and “harassment” of other dogs). Also, a pet can be played by biting people or other animals.

Long normal period lasts 2-4 days.
Detect the presence of rabies virus in a dog in such a short time is almost impossible. The only exception is the case when it is known that the dog was in contact with the sick dog or was bitten by it.
After 2 or 3 days, the dog shows signs of rabies clearly: the mouth is wide open, air is swallowed by the mouth, and abundant salivation appears.
This is a very dangerous stage - as a sick animal will transmit the virus only when it lick a microcrack on a person’s skin. If any of the above listed rabies symptoms are found, thencontact your veterinarian immediately. Especially with a radical change in the behavior of the pet.
  • Manic
The length of this stage of rabies is 3-5 days.
This stage is easier to detect in dogs due to its bright symptoms.
During this period, the dogs appear strong aggression on everything that surrounds it. The animal is trying to break the chain with a leash. And having run away, it bites oncoming people and dogs. The force of clenching the jaw is not controlled, it happens that because of this, the dogs break their teeth, and sometimes the jaw bone.
The animal does not eat or drink. And water in any form causes asthma attacks, as in the case of touching something to the mouth.
Unlike their healthy counterparts, who, before attacking their prey, make a loud barking, infected individuals, as a rule, attack silently, unpredictably. To annoy a dog it will be enough just to cough. Pet rushes not only to outsiders, but also to the owners.
Changing voice - barking becomes more like a howl.
  • Paralytic

This stage of rabies is most calm - the dog is practically not aggressive and indifferent to everything.

The last phase of the disease occurs in 2-3 days.
Paralysis of the larynx progresses, so the dog does not swallow food or water.
The paralysis of the hind limbs is manifested. Because of him, the animal is almost always in the supine position, and if it walks, it drags its paws. Saliva is still abundantly excreted. As a result, the internal organs are paralyzed and the dog, falling into a coma, dies.
