Ear infections in babies: signs, treatment, prevention of ear inflammation in a child

Children with multiple ear infections or a single, but prolonged infection, despite antibiotics, may be candidates for ventilation for the middle ear.
The tube is inserted under general anesthesia. An otolaryngologist makes a tiny incision in the child's eardrum and inserts a small tube into the slot. The tube reduces pressure and acts as a vent, allowing air to enter and liquids out, making the environment unsuitable for bacteria.
This is an artificial Eustachian tube, which allows the ear to "breathe" until the real Eustachian tube is restored.
The doctor may suggest this surgical solution, because a child with persistent fluid in the ears (or otitis media) will develop repeated ear infections, which can lead to hearing loss.
