Alone at home: the safety of a younger student
A child by the age of six becomes a completely independent person.
Of course, he cannot cook dinner or wash, but he is ready to stay in the apartment alone.
At a younger school age, parents may no longer be afraid to leave their fidget at home alone after school. Of course, you first need to teach him independence and elementary safety rules.
If you call your child every 10 minutes, worry all day about whether something has happened while the parents are at work, you are not yet ready to leave your baby alone with the potential dangers that await him at home.
You do not trust him, and the child feels it. Seeing that the mother is afraid to give him the opportunity to be independent, the schoolboy will decide that the truth is not yet ready for this very independence. This will undermine his faith in himself and his own strength, which will affect his future.
Victoria Tolstova, psychologist:“Parents need to speak frankly with the child about their level of responsibility. Tell him directly: I trust you, you're old enough to be the master in our house while I'm at work. So adults awaken a sense of responsibility in a child. He tries to justify his confidence and focuses on the task ”.
Mother of Light with our form tells:“For the first time, I remember how I had the choice to stay at home with my son or go to Spanish classes. I went for a long time already, and before, with whom to leave it, and that day my husband was at work, and my grandmothers could not. I didn’t want to miss an important lesson ... Then I remembered that at the age of 7 I went to the dance myself, came home after school and was warming myself for lunch - and my mother was not afraid. Maybe she was afraid, but she trusted me. At that moment I decided that I could also trust my child. And she does an excellent job at home alone. ”.
This insidious gas
A child should know that playing gas is dangerous. It should not include a stove or gas column without the presence of adults. You can teach him to deal with gas in advance, but only to warm up his lunch, and not to experiment or indulge. And be sure to conduct an "exam" on knowledge of the basics of handling a gas stove.
To faze understood, what is the danger, explain to him that you can seriously burn yourself by touching the flame: it will be very painful for him, he will have to go to the doctor and inject him (your baby is probably afraid of such prospects).
Tell us that the fire on the stove can go out, fill the room and poison people who are in it. Another gas can explode from the slightest spark. The flame can be extinguished because of a draft boiling on the stove of the soup, which will flood the fire. As a rule, such explanations are enough for a child to be careful.
The child needs to be told thatyou can not see gas, but you can smell it (demonstrate how). As soon as he feels such a smell, he should immediately inform adults, open the windows so that the room is aired, and leave the apartment, for example, to the neighbors.
Sergey Ivanchenko, firefighter:"If a child has smelled gas, he needs to immediately tell adults who can help right now. If you need to make a call, it is better to do this from your neighbors, because a spark may slip through the telephone set, which can cause a fire. The same applies to switches and any electrical appliances. It’s better not to touch them at all, not even to unplug them from the outlet, because in this case a spark may also arise ”.
In your home, there must be a lot of modern inventions that are powered by electricity. Plus - extension cords, wires, sockets. Even with the safest of them you need to be extremely careful.
Tell your child thatelectricity does not like contact with metal objects and water: children should know the basic rules and never touch the wires and electrical appliances with wet hands.
It is important for you not to leave electrical appliances turned on unnecessarily, especially if the child is left alone at home. The habit of turning off appliances from power outlets once may save your baby. Of course, this does not mean that when leaving the house you need to turn off the microwave, but it’s better not to leave a coffee grinder with a food processor for children's experiments.
Explain to the child, that when sparks from wires, sockets or electrical appliances appear, you should immediately call for help from your parents or neighbors.

Homework for the child
Together with your student remember what electrical appliances are in the house and how to handle them. Ask how the child imagines the malfunction or danger, and how he will behave in such a situation.
Of course, the child should be able to use, if not all, then the main electrical appliances. He should be able to warm himself lunch. Modern parents have become much calmer with the advent of microwave ovens. But in case of an unforeseen situation (or desire) the child will still have to use the stove.
Let the gas stove ignite only withelectric lighter. To make it easier for the child to cope with the task, leave him food in portions, so that it only needs to be warmed up. Let him try to do this with you several times, so that you can make sure that he can do it.
To prevent a fire, develop an algorithm for heating food: put a plate (metal) on the stove, light the stove, turn it off after 2 minutes, take a plate from the stove with a tack.
To avoid trouble
Learn with your child and hang up the phone of all rescue services in a prominent positionyour work and mobile phone, people’s phone numbers that can be accessed if parents are unavailable (you can be on the subway, the elevator or the phone will sit down)
Strictlyprevent the baby from opening the front doorif parents are not warned in advance. You must ensure that all households and relatives have their own key to the apartment. In no case should the child say through the door that there are no adults at home, or that there is no landline phone (if there really isn’t it).
If uninvited guests are knocking at the door or ringing, the child should call the parents or the police.
Children should know by heart their home address, home phone number, full names of parents, grandparents and their phone numbers.
Prepare your child for various unforeseen situations, lose them together and discuss possible consequences.
